For those of you not familiar with Twitter here is the blurb they post on their website – “Twitter is a privately funded startup with offices in the SoMA neighborhood of San Francisco, CA. Started as a side project in March of 2006, Twitter has grown into a real-time short messaging service that works over multiple networks and devices”. Kevin Boer of Domus Consulting Group has a much better description of what it is…you can check out his article “Frittering Away Your Time by Twittering…” on his blog.
I’ve found that now I have started Twittering, it’s cropping up in more and more places….on October 3rd, the Mountain View Police Department sent out a press release announcing that they are the first PD in California to join Twitter’s social networking site. I think they will be the first of many city services to start using Twitter for real-time updates and posting emergency information.
While I’m still on the fence about whether Twitter will be good for my business or not, I have enjoyed following the current political debates at election.twitter.com where they filter hundreds of Twitter updates per minute – the idea being to create a new source for gathering public opinion about the election and a new way for people to share their thoughts.
