Bagless in Palo Alto?

December 11th, 2008 · No Comments

Palo Alto residents and businesses are working together to reduce waste, litter, conserve resources and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, with many stores giving coupons for reusable bags. The city is providing the stores with free advertising in exchange for offering the deals.

  • Country Sun Natural Foods, 440 S. California Avenue – Buy 1 bag, get 1 FREE
  • Curves (Palo Alto South), 4117 El Camino Real – FREE bag when you enroll in a FREE 1-month trial membership
  • Mollie Stone’s Market, 164 S. California Avenue – Buy 1 bag, get 1 FREE
  • Palo Alto Hardware, 875 Alma Street – FREE bag with $20 purchase
  • Walgreens, 2605 Middlefield Road – Buy 5 bags, get 1 FREE
  • Whole Foods Market, 774 Emerson Street – Buy 1 bag, get 1 FREE

A survey earlier this year showed that less than 10 percent of shoppers in the city use reusable bags at grocery stores. Trying to avoid an all out ban on plastic, the city hopes to nudge residents and retailers through this voluntary program.  All Palo Alto residents will get coupons with their December utility bills, but you can also get them at the participating stores or online.
