Loyola Corners actually takes its name from the founders of Santa Clara University. The Jesuits purchased 700 acres of the former Hale Ranch, intending to build a new university to be named for their founds, Saint Ignatius of Loyola. But the 1906 earthquake destroyed their plans, and they sold most of the area to the Los Altos Country Club in 1924. Loyola Corners grew gradually with a few modest homes built early on for railroad workers. Most of the homes are one-story, ranch-style rustic bungalows on small lots.
